4 Days Tour to North Ethiopia (full flight)

Day 1. Fly - Addis Ababa – Lalibela. Early in the morning, transfer to the airport for your flight to Lalibela, famous for its rock-hewn churches dating back 800 years. This is the most important stop on the historical route and from the air the 11 churches, carved into the rugged mountainside, present an awesome spectacle. After visiting the 11 churches built below the ground, you will have an excursion to the most spectacular churches scattered around the town of Lalibela.

Day 2. Fly - Lalibela – Gondar. In the morning Transfer to the airport for your flight to Gondar. After arrival in Gondar and brief check-in to hotel, the afternoon will be spent exploring the sites of Gondar. The visit will include the 17thc Royal Enclosure, with its six castles and several other buildings. Additionally, you will visit Fasilidas's Pool, still used for Timket celebrations today and the Debre Birhan Selassie church that is most famous for mural paintings and fascinating history in the country. Depending on the availability of time you would also visit Kuskuam Mariam compound, a former palace in a partial state of ruin overlooking the city of Gondar.

Day 3. Fly - Gondar – Axum. In the morning, fly to the ancient city of Axum. Afterwards, explore this most historical city of the country. Sites to visit include the famous tall obelisks still stands, the Queen of Sheba's Bath (which supplies water to Axum year-round), King Bazen's tomb, and the Queen of Sheba's Palace. You will also visit the St. Mary of Zion church, where the original Ark of the Covenant is kept, according to local Ethiopian tradition. Unfortunately, no one (except one specially chosen guardian monk) is allowed to enter the chapel where the Ark is kept. An old church with access only for men, a well-organized museum and modern cathedral church are worth visiting.

Day 4. Fly - Axum - Addis Ababa. Early in the morning, drive eastward to the small town of Yeha. As the birthplace of the country's earliest high civilization, it is well worth visiting. Here, the main attraction is ruins of the pre-Christian Yeha Temple of the Moon. An open air archaeological museum, historical church and a small museum can be visited in the same compound. Afterwards, drive back to Axum and fly to Addis Ababa.

10 Days Tour to North Ethiopia

Day 1. Fly Addis Ababa - to – Lalibela. Early morning, transfer to the airport for your flight to Lalibela, famous for its rock-hewn churches dating back 800 years. This is the most important stop on the historical route and from the air the 11 churches, carved into the rugged mountainside, present an awesome spectacle. Spend the whole day visiting the 11 churches built below the ground.

Day 2. Lalibela excursion. In the morning drive northward and visit Yemrehane Christos, an old beautifully built-up church within a large cavern. Lunch break will be followed by a visit to Neakuto Leab and Asheton Mariam churches.

Day 3. Lalibela - Bahir Dar. Drive to Bahir Dar passing through a fantastically scenic natural land scape. You will be taken through a beautiful deep valleys and hill tops where villages can be seen here and there. Grass fields are usually occupied by groups of cattle. It is simply an opportunity to experience the original life style of the country side Ethiopia. Visit the Awramba Community and drive further to Bahir Dar.

Day 4. Bahir Dar - Excursion (Lake Tana monasteries and Blue Nile Falls). In the morning, embark on a boat for a trip on Lake Tana to explore some of the monasteries hidden on the shores and islands of Lake Tana. In the afternoon, depart to the thundering Blue Nile Falls for an easy hike excellent birding. End the day by looking sunset over Lake Tana from the top of Bezawit Hill, next to the former palace of Haile Selassie. Hippo can be seen by the river bank of Nile.

Day 5. Bahir Dar – Gondar. In the morning drive from Bahir Dar to Gondar (from south to north of Lake Tana). On the way, visit Guzara Palace, predecessor of Gondar palaces. Then, spend the rest of the day by exploring around the historic Gondar. Visit the Royal Compound, where enchanting 17th century castles stand, Debre Berhan Selassie Church, best for its mural paintings, and the Bath of Emperor Fasilodas, where the annual Timiket celebration takes place. And so much more!!

Day 6. Gondar - Simien Mountains NP. Morning after breakfast drive to and hike in the jagged panorama of the Simien Mountains National Park, famed for its exclusive landscape, afro-alpine vegetation and unique wildlife. The park is home to many of the endemic animal species of Ethiopia including the gelada baboon (guaranteed to be seen) as well as the rare Walia ibex and Ethiopian wolf.

Day 7. Semien Mountains NP – Axum. After breakfast, drive northward to the old city of Axum. For the road adventure lovers, this will be the day of excitement. It is one of the most interesting roads (built by Italians in 1930s) in the country. It is surrounded by eye catching and fascinating scenery. Eventually, you will make your way to Axum, after crossing the famous Tekeze River Valley.

Day 8. Axum - city tour. It will be a full day visit in and around Axum. Axum is one of the most historical cities of the country. Sites to visit include the famous tall obelisks still stands, the Queen of Sheba's Bath (which supplies water to Axum year-round), King Bazen's tomb, and the Queen of Sheba's Palace. You will also visit the St. Mary of Zion church, where the original Ark of the Covenant is kept, according to local Ethiopian tradition. And more is available to be seen.

Day 9. Axum- Yeha - Debre Damo -Hawzen /Adigrat. The whole drive today will be in Tigary's regional state. On your way to Mekele, you will stop to visit:

  • Yeha (the pre-Axumite state Temple - the oldest still stand structure in Ethiopia)
  • Debre Damo(6th c monastery found on the top of a table like plateau that can only be accessed by using a 15 meter long ascending rope.

Note: Access is denied for women to the monastery of Debre Damo.

Day 10. Adigrat/hawzen - mekele - Fly back to Addis. Gheralta is known for its tall sand made vertical cliff on the face of it many churches chiseled out starting from a thousand or more years ago. In the morning you will climb up to the very top of a cliff to visit Abbune Yemata or Maryam Kurkur, one of the most inaccessible churches of the world built in 4th c. After lunch, visit Abreha We Atsbeha (the finest work of the 4th) and continue the drive to Mekele.

Then, take a flight back to Addis Ababa

5 days tour Awash, Dire Dawa & Harar

Day 1. Addis Ababa – Awash. In the morning, you will drive for 200km on the road that connects Addis Ababa and Djibouti to reach Awash NP.

After lunch, you will walk around Awash River to see its fascinating Water fall. Late in the afternoon, make a game drive in the plain area to watch mammals and birds for which the park is renowned. About 80 mammal and 400 bird species are recorded in this park.

Day 2. Awash – Drie Dawa 300km. Early morning, make a game drive in the plain area to watch mammals and birds for which the park is renowned. About 80 mammal and 400 bird species are recorded in this park. Hence you will spot mammals like Beisa Orex, Soemmering's Gazzelle, Salt's Dik-Dik, Lesser and Greater Kudu etc. Then, proceed the drive to Drie Dawa

Day 3. Drie Dawa – Harar. After breakfast, you will take some time to visit the rail way station built 100 years ago. This compound is full old locomotive and cargos. Then, drive to Harar, the fourth holist Islamic center in the world next o Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem. The full day will be spent exploring the city within and out of Jogal, the wall built during 16th C aiming to control the entrance of non-Harari people to the town.

In the evening, visiting the hyena man who feeds the wild hyenas by passing bones through his hands and mouth to them.

Day 4. Harar – Adama. In the morning, drive to Adama. On the way stop over the town of Aweday, the largest open air market of Chat (Kat) in the world. Then, cross the Gararge Pleatue and the Rift Valley to reach the town of Adama for overnight stay.

Day 5. Adama - Addis Ababa. Drive westward to the vibrant Addis Ababa. This drive will take you from the Rift Valley to the central Highland of Ethiopia. On the way, you will stop over Debre Zeyt to visit the crater lakes of Bishoftu, Cheleleka, and Babogaya. Debre Zeyt is a town surrounded by 6 crater lakes.
