One Day Tour to Debre Libanos

In the morning drive northward 100km out of Addis Ababa, to reach the renowned medieval monastery of Debre Libanos. Founded by Abune Tekle Haymanot during 13thc, Debre Libanos is an important monastic center for Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity.

Here, visitors will take time to visit the modern church built by Emperor Hailesilasie, a cave which believed to be the prayer chapel of Tekle Haymanot, and an interesting museum that displays valuable historic and religious collection.

Then, we will have picnic at one of the sites that rewards a fascinating view towards the Jemma valley. Afterwards, walk around the edge of the valley to see the 17thc Portuguese Bridge, the endemic Gelada Baboon and different types of birds like Lammaergeyr, Ruppell's, Lappet faced, and a variety of vultures. Many more endemic and common birds will also be easily seen in this trip.

Eventually, we will start driving back to Addis Ababa and it will be end of the tour.

Distance: 200km away from Addis

Day 1: Leaving Addis Ababa through the road that connects the capital with the northern part of the country, we will drive for about 200km and there appears the Blue Nile Gorge. This truly magnificent gorge, which spans altitudes of around 2500m to 1200m, is comparable in scale to America's Grand Canyon. This gorge follows the course of the famous Blue Nile River. After exploring around the gorge and the river bridge, we will have picnic by a beautiful water fall site. Then, drive back the same way for overnight in the Ethio- German lodge.

Day 2: In the morning, walk around the edge of Jemma valley to see the 17thc Portuguese Bridge, the endemic Gelada Baboon and different types of birds like Lammaergeyr, Ruppell's, Lappet faced, and a variety of vultures. Many more endemic and common birds will also be easily seen in this area. Afterwards, drive 5 km to reach to Debre Libanos monastery. Drive directly from Addis Ababa to the small village of Wonchi. It is truly enchanting and picturesque Wonchi Crater Lake hidden in the 3,386m-high extinct volcano. The mountain is high enough to have a characteristic forest zone with an area of heath moorland and other associated vegetation and wildlife. It is possible to get down to the Lake by walking or on riding horse. At the shore of the lake you will embark to a dugout wooden canoe to go to the ancient Church on an island and to the mineral hot water springs. The picnic break will be followed by the returning drive to Addis Ababa.

Day 1: In your drive between Addis Ababa and Wonchi, you will stop to visit the church of Addis Alem Mariam (Mary) - which once planed to be the capital during the reign of emperor Menilik II, and Gudar Water Fall. After coffee break at Ambo, you will drive to Wonchi crater lake and mountain. It is truly enchanting and picturesque Crater Lake hidden in the 3,386m-high extinct volcano. The mountain is high enough to have a characteristic forest zone with an area of heath moorland and other associated vegetation and wildlife. It is possible to get down to the Lake by walking or riding horse. At the shore of the lake you will embark to a dugout wooden canoe to go to the ancient Church on an island and to the mineral hot water springs. Late in the afternoon, drive down to the town of Woliso for overnight.

Day 2: spend the morning time by exploring around the compound of Negash Lodge which once was the palace of Emperor Hailesilasie. The endemic Thick Billed Reaven, Vervet Monkey, Colubos Monkey and Hyrax can be seen easily. You can also take time to swim in the hot spring water pool. After lunch, drive back to Addis Ababa the other way round. En route, we will stop and visit the villages of Gurage and Oromo tribe.

Early in the morning we will drive out of Addis Ababa in the south direction. Just after 50km we will stop to visit Melka Kunturie. Melka Kunture is a prehistoric site regarded to be one of the most important Stone-Age sites in the Horn of Africa. An informative site museum and an open air excavation site are worth visiting.

Afterwards, the drive will continue for 5km and then we will turn to the right side 12km long off-road to reach the St. Marry Church of Adadi Mariam. Adadi Mariam is a rock hewn church believed to be built by king Lalibela and is one of the famous Orthodox Christians churches in the area. Due to its proximity this church is frequently visited by the pilgrims of Addis Ababa.

From the junction of Adadi Mariam, it is only 30km to go to the stele site Tiya. Recorded as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tiya is a field of greave mark steles estimated to be 900 years old. In the south region of Ethiopia the archaeologists have already unearthed and erected about 10,000 of such greave mark steles.

Take time for your picnic and proceed the drive back to Addis Ababa. On the way, stop by the bridge of Awash river to see a fascinating water fall and people cleaning their body and clothes.

Day 1: Early in the morning we will drive out of Addis Ababa in the south direction. Just after 50km we will stop to visit Melka Kunturie. Afterwards, the drive will continue for 5km and then we will turn to the right side 12km long off-road to reach the St. Marry Church of Addadi Mariam. Adadi Mariam is a rock hewn church believed to be built by king Lalibela and is one of the famous Orthodox Christians churches in the area. Due to its proximity this church is frequently visited by the pilgrims of Addis Ababa.

From the junction of Adadi Mariam, it is only 30km to go to the stele site Tiya. Recorded as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tiya is a field of greave mark steles estimated to be 900 years old. In the southern region of Ethiopia the archaeologists have already unearthed and erected about 10,000 of such greave mark steles.

From the stele site we will drive southward for another 55km to stop for Lunch break by Butajira. Afternoon drive will take you from the highland to the Ethiopian Great Rift Valley. This 50km long connective road of the highlands and the Rift Valley will provide us some panoramic view points and end up by the town of Ziway. Late in the afternoon, we will walk by the Shore of Lake Ziway, one of the eight Rift Valley lakes, to see its interesting bird life. Even though the spotting will depend on your luck, you will have a boat trip on the lake to see African Hippopotamus.

Overnight in a Hotel

Day 2: 90 km northward drive out of Ziway will take you to Mojo, the biggest dry port town of Ethiopia. It is here that you will join the Djibouti road and crawl in the dense traffic to get to Bishoftu. Bishoftu is the base and training center of the Ethiopia's main Air Force. Moreover, the town lies at the epicenter of the most accessible Crater Lake field in Africa. Bishoftu is dotted by six crater lakes. Lake Bishoftu, Hora, and Kuriftu will be visited in the morning time. After lunch, you will explore around Lake Babogaya and Cheleleka. Since the lakes are known for supporting bird life, you will see a variety of water fowl, knob-billed duck, Pygmy goose, and spur-winged goose, Garganey, pintail, northern shoveler, European crane, lesser flamingos, waders and more. Stop a while for a drink and continue your drive back to Addis Ababa.

Two days Tour to Awash National Park

Day 1: In the morning, you will drive for 200km on the road that connects Addis Ababa and Djibouti to reach Awash NP. On the way, you will stop over Debre Zeyt to visit the crater lakes of Bishoftu, Cheleleka, and Babogaya.

After lunch, you will walk around Awash River to see its fascinating Water fall. Late in the afternoon, make a game drive in the plain area to watch mammals and birds for which the park is renowned. About 80 mammal and 400 bird species are recorded in this park. The game viewing drive on both days will offer you large mammals like Beisa Orex, Soemmering's Gazzelle, Salt's Dik-Dik, Lesser and Greater Kudu, Deffassa Waterbuck, Warthog, Vervet Monkey, Colubus Monkey, Hamadryas Baboon, Anubis Baboon, Klipspringer and some predators who can be seen only infrequently.

Day 2: Early in the morning, drive to the northern part of the park. Today's main destination here is the area of Filweha Hot Sorings. These natural hot springs feed a series of beautiful translucent blue pools that are situated in a grove of tall doum palms on the northern boundary of the park. Different mammals and birds will be visited on the way forth and back. You will also stop over fascinating viewpoints to enjoy and take pictures. After a picnic, you will drive back to Addis Ababa. En route, stop over an interesting and expanding Lake Basaka.

In the morning, drive from Addis to Ankober. The drive on the high altitude of Ankober area will be accompanied with many stop overs to see the meadows, scattered villages and fascinating scenery. After picnic lunch you will visit the old palace of Ankober and trek around the hills.

Churches are as old as the palace or the town itself and are still active with an access for visitors. Ankober was once the seat of kings of Shewa province including the famous emperor Menelik II. It was chosen as a capital for its strategic position for trade and considered as highlander's window to the Rift Valley.

On the way back to Addis Ababa, you will stope over one of the villages to get in to the family houses and experiance real life of the the people there.

Day 3: Guassa - Addis Ababa (320km). Early in the morning drive to Tarma Bere and then turn to Sela Dingay. From here it is possible to hike and visit the monasteries of Tsadkane Mariam and Adjana Mikael. Eventually, drive back to Addis.
