3 Days trip to Danakil Depression

Day 1. Fly Addis - Mekele - Drive Dodom - Erta Ale

Early morning, fly to Mekele and and drive down from the edges of Rift Valley escarpment to its floor. This drive will eventually take you to Dodom a village at the base of Erta Ale.

Late in the afternoon, when the temperature gets cooler, you will walk up to the top of a gentle mountain for about 3 hours. Settle by the rim of the volcano and spend the night wandering the dramatic action of the boiling lava. It is a place to be seen once in life time.

Erta Ale is a caldera found at the top of the mountain that measures 613 m a.s.l. As one of the few most active volcano lava lakes in the world, Erta Ale is the most fascinating and physically challenging natural attractions anywhere in Ethiopia. It is simply a place that brings nature into a closer view of people.

Day 2. Erta Ale - Hamedela - Dallol

Rise up at dawn and walk around the rim of the active and dormant volcanos found at the top of Erta Ale. This will give you a chance to have a daylight visit on the attraction and to keep an amazing pictures in your camera. Afterwards, walk back to the camping site. After breakfast, set off to Hamedela through a 70km most challenging and adventure full road. This drive will take you through a changing landscape of solidified lava, rock, sand and the occasional palm lined oasis.

Late in the afternoon, you will see very long caravans with hundreds of camels one tied with the other and loaded with salt to be taken to the highlanders. The sunset behind the caravans is one of the most fascinating moments in the Denakil. Spend the night by camping at Hamedela.

Day 3. Hamedela - Mekele - Addis Ababa

Dallol (116 m.a.s.l) is the deepest place in Africa and is the hottest place in the world. This place once was a sea bead of saline water and today it is a salt plain from which local people extract salt bars called Amolle that has been used as currency for 1600 years in Ethiopia. After attending the salt excavation process, you will visit Assale saline lake, the sulphur lakes and photogenic caravans consisting of numerous camels. Since the place has a strange nature, this day will be one of your fascinating and adventurous day ever. Finally, return back to Hamedela along the line of the caravan camels and continue the drive to Mekele. Eventually, fly to Addis Ababa

On the way visit the 4th C. churches of Wukiro Cherkos and Abreha We Atsbeha. Overnight in Gheralta.

Day 4. Hawzen - Yeha - Debre Damo - Axum

The whole drive today will be in Tigary's regional state. On your way you will stop to visit:

  • Yeha (the pre-Axumite state Temple - the oldest still stand structure in Subsaharan Africa)
  • Debre Damo(6th c monastery found on the top of a table like plateau that can only be accessed by using a 15 meter long ascending rope.

Note: Access is denied for women to the monastery of Debre Damo.

Day 5. Axum City Tour - Fly back to Addis Ababa

It will be a full day visit in and around Axum. Axum is one of the most historical cities of the country. Sites to visit include the famous tall obelisks still stands, the Queen of Sheba's Bath (which supplies water to Axum year-round), King Bazen's tomb, and the Queen of Sheba's Palace. You will also visit the St. Mary of Zion church, where the original Ark of the Covenant is kept, according to local Ethiopian tradition. Eventually, take a flight to Addis Ababa.

Day 1. Addis Ababa - Mekele – Dallol. In the morning you will fly from Addis Ababa to Mekele and drive to Dallol. The first part of this day's drive will take you from Tigrian highlands to the floor of the Great Rift Valley. Stop by the town of Berhale for some paper works. Then, proceed the drive to Hamedela, where you will have an overnight stop. Late in the afternoon, explore Denakil Depression by driving on the flat salt plain that used to be a seabed once. Here, you will learn the local techniques of extracting salt from the ground. Enjoy also the late afternoon moves of long caravans with hundreds of camels one tied with the other and loaded with salt to be taken to the highlanders. The sunset behind the caravans is one of the most fascinating moments in the Denakil. Spend the night by camping at Hamedela.

Day 3. Ertale – Afdera. Very early in the morning, you will return back to the camp site at the base of the hill. After breakfast, drive to Afdera. Afdera is a saline lake known for its high quality and huge amount of food salt production in the country. Plenty of thermal springs are feeding this lake. Hence, you can take shower in one of this springs found close to the camping site where we pitch our tents. Accommodation; camping

Day 4. Afdera – Logia. Leaving Afdera behind, you will drive southeastward direction to reach the Semera, the capital of Afar Regional State. On the way, you will see the Afar man looking after his precious camels. Accommodation; Agda Hotel

Day 5. Logia – Awash. In this day the drive will be along with big trucks running between Ethiopia and Djibouti, since the road is the only connecter of the country to the port. En route you will Crosse Yangundi Rassa NP and you would see some will animals around. Eventually, you will get in to Awash NP. Accommodation; Awash Falls Lodge.

Day 6. Awash – Harar. In the morning, make a 2nd round game drive in the park and continue to Harar. This drive will take you from the Rift Valley to the South East Highlands of Ethiopia. Harar is the fourth holist Islamic center in the world next o Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem.

Day 7. City tour in Harar. The full day will be spent exploring this city within and out of Jogal, the wall built during 16th C aimed to control the entrance of non-Harari people to the town. In the evening, visiting the hyena man who feeds the wild hyenas by passing bones through his hands and mouth to them.

Day 8. Harar - Dire Dawa – Addis. Afterwards, drive to DrieDawa, a big town born by the only and old aged French built railway which connects Djibouti with Addis Ababa. After lunch, you will take some time to visit the rail way station built 100 years ago. This compound is full of worth visiting old locomotives and cargos.

Fly back to Addis Ababa
